RTW DELIVERS TWELVE TM9 TOUCHMONITOR UNITS TO PROSIEBENSAT.1 PRODUKTION

Ultra-flexible metering systems to be installed in all of the four HD control rooms and eight ProTools edit suites of the TV service provider

COLOGNE, DECEMBER 2011 – RTW from Cologne, a leading vendor of visual audio meters for professional broadcast, production, post-production, and quality control, recently announced a significant reference installation of their metering solutions at one of Germany’s top TV producers. ProSiebenSat.1 Produktion GmbH, a subsidiary of ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG, will equip their HD control rooms and edit suites with a total of twelve TM9 TouchMonitor units by RTW.

The majority of governmental and commercial TV broadcasters in Europe have already introduced EBU R128-compliant loudness metering, with many more to follow in the near future. RTW’s TouchMonitor range implements all major loudness standards including EBU R128, ITU-R BS.1770-2/1771, ATSC A/85, and ARIB. With the latest firmware, TouchMonitors now feature the innovative MagicLRA instrument for an integrated view of loudness and loudness range.

Based at Unterföhring near Munich, ProSiebenSat.1 Produktion provides TV productions and technical services within the ProSiebenSat.1 group. Joachim Hentschel, Solution Architect Media Base Systems at ProSiebenSat.1 Produktion, was in charge of converting and reconstructing the four HD control rooms, three of which are centered around Lawo mc² 66 digital consoles. He says: “We have used metering systems by RTW for a long time, so it was clear to me very early in the planning stage of this essential project that we would once more rely on that proven technology. A large number of RTW’s classic peak meters are in use at ProSiebenSat.1 Produktion. This is also true for the SurroundMonitor 10800XM: we are using some 10800XM units still today.”

ProSiebenSat.1 Produktion’s four HD control rooms are used for preproduction and broadcast purposes. Virtually all productions of the broadcast group are made here. The TouchMonitor units are located on so-called script carts in the Lawo-based studios. Similarly, TM9 units will be implemented in the ProTools-based edit suites that are used for post-processing and editing voice recordings and movies (including 5.1 productions). All of the twelve TM9 units have a mixed analog and digital audio-interface configuration.

Hentschel: “Since our edit suites also include Tektronix video meters that integrate the RTW-licensed surround sound analyzer, we already know the intuitive surround view designed by RTW and will definitely use the same functionality provided by our new TouchMonitors.” Hentschel has also shown much interest in the latest addition to the TouchMonitor range: The TM3 might become a budget-friendly option for workspaces where audio metering is less important compared to a control room. The compact TM3 will be introduced at the NAB show in Las Vegas next spring.

“We are very happy that ProSiebenSat.1 Produktion, a long-standing customer, has once again opted for our state-of-the-art products,” says RTW’s managing director Andreas Tweitmann. “We are sure that the TouchMonitor is the perfect tool for meeting today’s and tomorrow’s challenges in audio metering, for example, the loudness harmonization many European broadcasters will soon be struggling with.”

The RTW TouchMonitor marks the beginning of a new era in visual audio metering. The TM7 and TM9 TouchMonitor versions featuring 7" and 9" touch-sensitive displays, respectively, provide unparalleled flexibility and modularity combined with intuitive control. The software visualizes multiple sources simultaneously. It supports displaying the same signal on multiple instruments in parallel, each with dedicated defaults. All in all, the system visualizes up to 16 analog and/or digital sources at the same time. The TM9 is even capable of providing a view of up to 32 digital channels when the 3G SDI option is implemented. What is more, the TouchMonitor software supports both horizontal and vertical operation.
