The number of audio programmes produced in surround is growing steadily and the visual monitoring of such programmes with appropriate tools is gaining more and more importance. This means that an increasing number of studios and control rooms have to be fitted or retrofitted with adequate analysis technology.

The SurroundMonitor 10600 series includes sophisticated and budget friendly six-channel display systems with ITU BS.1771 loudness meter and Surround Sound Analyzer ("House" display) for monitoring digital stereo, multi-channel, and surround audio signals in fully-digital studio environments in broadcast, pre and post production, music production, mastering or video editing suites and workstations.

Features

  • Digital AES3 inputs (32 to 96 kHz)
  • Up to 6-channel multi-standard Peak Program Meter (PPM) with additional SPL/Leq bargraph
  • Peak memory, peak hold and Over detector for all channels
  • ITU BS.1771 Loudness meter with additional selectable pair of bargraphs for display of the momentary, integrated and longterm loudness values
  • Easy change between PPM and Loudness meter via programmed presets
  • Surround Sound Analyzer with total volume indicator, Front/center/rear balance indicator, phantom source indicators
  • Up to 10-fold correlation display
  • 2-channel audio vectorscope
  • 31 bands real time analyzer (RTA)
  • Dialnorm meter for digital signals
  • AES/EBU status monitor
  • Calibratable sound level display
  • A-, C,- CCIR2k-, RLB(K), RTW weighting filters
  • Remote control interface
  • VGA output

Instruments

The Peak Program Meter (right, marked with a white frame) displays the peak level of up to six channels acc. to selected standard with integrated loudness and peak hold indicators on high resolution bargraphs. A separate bargraph shows the summed SPL/Leq level.

The Loudness Meter (right, marked with white frame) acc. to ITU BS.1771 guideline shows the RLB weighted momentary loudness for up to six channels on high resolution bargraphs. Two additional bargraphs optionally display the summed momentary loudness of all channels, the integrated mean momentary value for a short time period, or the loudness value of a longterm reading (infinite or manual).

The Surround Sound Analyzer (House display, above left, marked with a white frame) is a powerful tool for visualizing the interaction of all important parameters of surround signals. The dynamic behaviour of all display elements corresponds to the subjective listening impression, enabling you to see the balance of a surround programme intuitively and at a glance.

The Audio Vectorscope (above left, marked with a white frame) is a high quality Lissajous display for stereo signals available in surround modes and for all modes with stereo channel pairs showing the phase relationship of two channels in real time. Additionally, a corresponding phase meter is displayed.

The 1/3 octave Real Time Analyzer (above left, marked with a white frame) displays the spectral distribution of individual channels or channel groups using 31 bands with 1/3-octave intervals. An additional function for easy evaluation is the switchable peak hold indicator.

The Multi-Correlator (above left, marked with a white frame) is a mulit-fold display mode with up to ten phase meters for all possible channel pairs, graphically placed inside a 5.1 speaker setup. To obtain a view of the "surround envelopment" effect an optional 300 Hz low pass filter can be activated.

The Channel Status Display (above left, marked with a white frame) shows the status of the digital inputs as well as the resolution and bits, the phase relationship, the sync reference and the detected sampling frequency.

The AES/EBU Status Monitor (below left, marked with a white frame) shows a summary of the most relevant status data of one of the digital input channels. The measured sample rate is displayed in this mode as well.

The numerical display (below left, marked with a white frame) reads out the maximum level, over counts and maximum SPL values measured for all six channels when the PPM is used.

The numerical display (below left, marked with a white frame) will return the numerical reading of the shortterm and/or longterm loudness values when the ITU BS.1771 Loudness Meter is used.

The Stopwatch (below left, marked with a white frame) provides an easy way to measure time spans and intermediate results.

The Dialnorm Meter (below left, marked with a white frame) calculates and displays Dialnorm values from the digital inputs. Dialnorm is used in film sound mixing and describes the normalization of the dialog loundness level with respect to a certain reference monitoring level.
